Balance

Six stories up above the cheering crowd,
among the pigeons and the plastic bags
I set my feet upon the wire and bowed
and shuffled out among the urban crags.
These twenty years I’ve learned to love the act
of balance, pitting speed and skill and nerve
against the fear of falling and the fact
of pavement lurking deep beneath the curve
of my balance pole, the only tool allowed
to me in my attempt to touch a cloud.
